A comprehensibility of the universe cannot be assumed.
Science (theory, hypothesis, experiment, measurement) aims to expand the horizon of our sensory limitation. At the same time it is always an instrument of reassurance of our own being and our position in the universe. The precision of the instruments, the complexity of the theories grow immeasurably since modern times. The limits of the “experienceable” world are continuously expanding. At the same time, the measurands of elementary physics (time, space, particles) reach smallest dimensions, which are beyond our imagination. Despite all this, there will always remain a space of the non-measurable.
Miriam Hamann’s precise sculptures, in their abstract “simple” elegance, represent the metaphysical intangible of scientific knowledge. Their aesthetic fascination counteracts any form of irrational dogmatism. Thus the works unfold a highly topical relevance. Fundamentalist dogmatists cannot stand gaps, distances and contradictions. Miriam Hamann’s sculptures though abstract, aestheticise and celebrate the phenomenon of the unattainable with technical precision. In the unattainable there is always a deep moment of melancholy.
