Scent for Offspace is an ongoing series of fragrances created for self-organised cultural institutions. Alluding to their often precarious financial circumstances—typically contingent on the goodwill of public funding authorities—Bernhard Weber composes a dedicated “corporate scent” for each space. Borrowed from marketing, the term refers to fragrances produced for well-funded players such as banks or the fashion industry; these scents aim not only to strengthen identification with a brand but also to enhance a sense of well-being, ideally boosting sales.A native of Upper Austria, with the strong local presence of the former Tabakwerke Linz, Weber chose to design a fragrance for Kunstraum Memphis that gently recalls fresh tobacco—Memphis being a well-known cigarette brand of Austria Tabak GmbH. The scent includes, among other components, the aromatic compound coumarin, which is also used in cigarettes to refine their flavour. Beyond its tobacco note, Memphis smells spicy, woody, dry, and mildly sweet.
The fragrance is composed in accordance with the regulations of the IFRA (International Fragrance Association). Memphis (Scent for Offspace) was first presented in 2015.
