In the 21st century we are facing problems on a mythical scale. Climate change, neoliberalism, securitarianism, boarder regimes, financial and economic crisis: We are challenged by monstrous machines, that are built of tiny particles and globals streams and movements at the same time. In theses machines cultural and natural, individual and social, local and global mechanisms merge into powerful networks. These machines can hardly be controlled with the instruments of national party politics. Escaping them into utopian “private” resorts is impossible due to ubiquitious internet streams pervading our lives. Do we thus have to integrate into these monstrous machines? Or can we plot new political strategies apart from the “lack of alternatives” politicians keep on talking about. How do we open up spaces of possibility for action? Can we navigate the big institutions and networks? Which modes of existence have to be invented, if new technologies, things and natural phenomena are no longer passive content of political debates, but become active and have their own agencies? What is at stake when affects get increasingly controlled by socio-political practices and devoured by capitalistic forces? How can we conceive subjectivity in a pluriverse, in which matter is not inert and passive but vibrates right in our midst? These philosophical questions serve as backdrop for this exhibition. Instead of resigning to a catastrophism, the artists compose with affective, technological and socio-political dynamics and ask for critical instruments and speculative futures.Sarah Lehnerer, Dominik Mayer, Johannes Siegmund and Alain Volpe recently received their MFA in Critical Studies at the Academy of fine Arts Vienna. They live and work in and between Vienna, Zurich and Berlin.
