Single Keys is a series of shapes, each differing slightly from the next. These signs or letters with the small gaps between them that are so necessary for writing, symbolic communication, and reading develop like the flux of speech. The shapes are not coded in the sense that they stand for something outside of themselves, rather they relate directly to each other and acquire an ornamental or colloquial aspect. Salome Schmuki works with these aspects pulling at some of the characteristics of letters in this confined space, filling or activating it.
Salome Schmuki examines the structure and organization of language, the way in which written language is coded, and relationships and/or disruptions in various aspects of perception and the (sub-)processes involved in it. She lives in Brussels and St.Gallen. Recent presentations include, et al.: Raum mit Licht (Curatedby), Vienna; Kunstmuseum St.Gallen; Mukha Antwerpen; Fundació Antoni Tàpies, Barcelona, and Komplot, Brussels. Residencies a.o. at Wiels, Brussels and Sitterwerk, St.Gallen.
